The crucifix that bled during Holy Week in our village church
Our village church outside Lima is small and old. The wooden crucifix above the altar has been there for over a hundred years. During Holy Week 2024, on Good Friday, the crucifix began to bleed. I was there for the Veneration of the Cross. I am an architect, so I notice structural details. I saw a dark red liquid forming at the wounds on the hands and feet of the corpus. It ran down the wood in thin streams. The priest stopped the service. People were weeping and praying. Some ran out in fear. Others fell to their knees. I stayed and watched. The bleeding continued for about twenty minutes. The priest collected some of the liquid on a white cloth. It looked and smelled like blood. The bishop sent a team to investigate. They found no mechanism, no hidden reservoir, no explanation. The wood of the crucifix was examined and found to be solid, with no cavities or tubes. I have designed buildings for twenty years. I understand materials and structures. There is no architectural or engineering explanation for what I witnessed. The cloth with the stains is preserved in our parish.
