The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, delivering three secrets and culminating in the Miracle of the Sun — witnessed by an estimated 70,000 people, including skeptics and journalists.
History
Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos (age 10), Francisco Marto (age 9), and Jacinta Marto (age 7) — received six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin at the Cova da Iria. The Virgin entrusted them with three secrets and asked for prayer, penance, and the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. The apparitions culminated on October 13, 1917, with the Miracle of the Sun: approximately 70,000 people gathered at the Cova, including journalists from secular newspapers, and witnessed the sun appear to dance, spin, and plunge toward the earth before returning to its normal position. The event was reported by multiple newspapers, including the anti-clerical O Seculo, whose reporter Avelino de Almeida wrote a detailed eyewitness account. Francisco and Jacinta died in the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic and were canonized by Pope Francis in 2017. Lucia became a Carmelite nun and died in 2005.
Messages
The three secrets of Fatima, gradually revealed over decades, included: (1) a vision of hell and the need for devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; (2) a prophecy about World War II and the spread of Russia's errors (communism) if Russia was not consecrated to Mary's Immaculate Heart; and (3) a vision of a 'bishop dressed in white' being shot — widely interpreted as the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. The Virgin also taught the children the Fatima Prayer and requested the daily recitation of the Rosary for world peace.
Spiritual Significance
Fatima is arguably the most consequential Marian apparition in modern history. The Miracle of the Sun remains one of the most widely witnessed supernatural events ever recorded, with testimony from believers and skeptics alike. The geopolitical prophecies — particularly regarding Russia and World War II — have been the subject of extensive analysis. Pope John Paul II credited Our Lady of Fatima with saving his life during the 1981 assassination attempt and placed the bullet that struck him in the crown of the statue at Fatima. The apparition has profoundly shaped Catholic devotion, inspiring the First Saturday devotion, the Fatima Prayer, and the consecration of Russia, which Pope Francis performed in 2022.
