The Column of the Flagellation

A short column believed to be the one to which Jesus was tied during his scourging.

History

Kept in the Basilica of Saint Praxedes in Rome. Brought from Jerusalem, traditionally by Cardinal Giovanni Colonna in 1223.

Scientific Investigation

The column is made of jasper and is approximately 63 cm high. Its material is consistent with Roman-era construction in the Middle East.

Spiritual Significance

Represents the physical suffering of Christ during the Passion.
