
A phial containing a cloth stained with what is believed to be the blood of Christ, brought to Bruges during the Crusades.
History
Brought to Bruges by Thierry of Alsace, Count of Flanders, after the Second Crusade in 1150. The relic is venerated annually during the Procession of the Holy Blood, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event.
Scientific Investigation
The phial has not been opened for modern scientific analysis. Historical records confirm its presence in Bruges since the 12th century.
Spiritual Significance
The annual procession is one of the most important religious events in Belgium.
