The Holy Chalice of Valencia

An agate cup mounted on a gold stem with handles, recognized by the Vatican as a 'historical relic' though not officially authenticated as the cup used at the Last Supper. The upper cup is a 1st-century Middle Eastern agate vessel.

History

Tradition holds it was brought to Rome by Saint Peter, then sent to Huesca, Spain, during the persecution of Valerian. It was kept in various monasteries during the Moorish invasion before arriving at Valencia Cathedral in 1437. Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass with it.

Scientific Investigation

Archaeological analysis dates the upper agate cup to between the 4th century BC and the 1st century AD, consistent with a Palestinian origin. The gold mounting and handles are medieval additions. It matches descriptions of vessels used in Jewish Passover celebrations.

Spiritual Significance

The only chalice recognized by the Vatican as a legitimate historical candidate for the Holy Grail. Its use by two popes adds to its significance.
