Our Lady of Laus

Saint-Etienne-le-Laus, France

Visionaries: Benoite Rencurel, a young shepherdess

Overview

Our Lady appeared to Benoite Rencurel, a young shepherdess, over a period of 54 years from 1664 to 1718 in the French Alps near the hamlet of Laus. The Virgin Mary identified herself as 'Mary, the Mother of your Lord' and requested the construction of a church and a house for priests. The apparitions were accompanied by mystical phenomena including supernatural fragrances, ecstasies, and the gift of reading souls for the sacrament of confession.

History

Benoite Rencurel was a poor, illiterate shepherdess who began seeing the Blessed Virgin Mary in May 1664 at age 17. The apparitions continued for 54 years until her death in 1718, making this one of the longest series of Marian apparitions in history. Our Lady first appeared in a valley called the Fours, then directed Benoite to the hamlet of Laus where she requested a church be built. A chapel was constructed in 1666, and it became a center of reconciliation and conversion. Benoite received the stigmata and was given the charism of reading souls, which she used to help penitents prepare for confession. The sanctuary became known as a place of extraordinary graces for the sacrament of reconciliation.

My visit to Our Lady of Laus

My pilgrimage to Our Lady of Laus in Saint-Etienne-le-Laus was a turning point in my spiritual life. I went expecting a nice trip and came home with a renewed faith. The other pilgrims I met there became friends, and we still keep in touch.
