The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in the grotto of Massabielle, identifying herself as 'the Immaculate Conception' and revealing a spring whose waters have been associated with over 70 medically verified miraculous healings.
History
Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, the Blessed Virgin appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, an impoverished and asthmatic 14-year-old, in a small grotto along the Gave de Pau river. During the ninth apparition on February 25, the Virgin instructed Bernadette to dig in the ground, revealing a spring that has since flowed continuously at a rate of 32,000 gallons per day. On March 25, when Bernadette asked the lady her name, she replied in the local Gascon dialect: 'Que soy era Immaculada Concepciou' — 'I am the Immaculate Conception.' This was remarkable because the dogma had been defined by Pope Pius IX only four years earlier, and Bernadette, who was illiterate, did not understand the theological term. The local bishop approved the apparitions in 1862 after a rigorous four-year investigation. Bernadette entered the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, where she died in 1879 at age 35. Her body was found incorrupt when exhumed in 1909 and again in 1919 and 1925.
Messages
The Virgin's messages at Lourdes centered on prayer, penance, and conversion. She asked Bernadette to 'pray for sinners,' to kiss the ground as a penance, and to tell the priests to build a chapel at the grotto. She also instructed Bernadette to 'drink and wash' at the spring — a spring that did not yet exist until Bernadette dug for it. The simplicity of the messages — prayer, penance, and trust — has made Lourdes one of the most accessible Marian devotions in the Church.
Spiritual Significance
Lourdes is the most scientifically documented miracle site in the world. The Lourdes Medical Bureau, established in 1882, has investigated over 7,000 reported healings. Of these, 70 have been declared miraculous by the Church after exhaustive medical review — each case requiring that the healing be instantaneous, complete, lasting, and scientifically inexplicable. The spring water itself has been analyzed repeatedly and found to contain no special medicinal properties, making the healings even more remarkable. Lourdes receives approximately 6 million pilgrims annually, making it the second most-visited Catholic pilgrimage site after Guadalupe. The incorrupt body of Bernadette Soubirous, displayed in Nevers, provides an additional connection to the Sacred Wonders documented on this site.
