Our Lady of Querrien

Witnessed by Jeanne Courtel, a 12-year-old deaf and mute shepherdess

Our Lady of Querrien

The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Jeanne Courtel, a 12-year-old shepherdess who had been deaf and mute from birth, near the village of La Prenessaye in Brittany. Our Lady miraculously healed the girl, restoring her hearing and speech. She then directed Jeanne to the location of a buried statue of 'Our Lady of Eternal Aid' and requested that a chapel be built on the site.

History

In August 1652, young Jeanne Courtel was tending sheep near her village when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her. Despite being deaf and mute from birth, Jeanne was suddenly able to hear and speak after the apparition. The next day, Mary appeared again and directed Jeanne to a spot where a statue of the Virgin was buried. The statue was unearthed, and the apparitions continued for a total of 15 appearances. The Archbishop of Saint-Brieuc investigated and authenticated the apparitions in September 1652. A chapel was immediately built on the site, which became known as Notre-Dame de Toute-Aide (Our Lady of All Help).

Messages

Our Lady requested the construction of a chapel and directed the visionary to the location of a buried statue. She identified herself under the title of 'Eternal Aid.'

Associated Miracles

The instantaneous healing of Jeanne Courtel's lifelong deafness and muteness; the discovery of the buried statue; numerous subsequent healings at the chapel.

Scientific Investigation

Archbishop Denis de La Barde of Saint-Brieuc authenticated the apparitions in September 1652, shortly after they occurred. The miraculous healing of Jeanne's deafness and muteness was a key factor.

Spiritual Significance

The apparition demonstrates Mary's compassion for the disabled and marginalized. The miraculous healing of a deaf-mute child and the discovery of the buried statue were seen as powerful signs of divine favor.
