The Incorrupt Tongue of Saint Anthony of Padua

The perfectly preserved tongue, vocal cords, and jaw of Saint Anthony of Padua, one of the greatest preachers in Church history.

History

When Anthony's tomb was opened in 1263, 32 years after death, his body had decomposed but his tongue was found perfectly fresh and intact. Saint Bonaventure, who was present, exclaimed: 'O blessed tongue, which always praised God and caused others to praise Him!'

Scientific Investigation

The tongue has remained preserved for over 790 years. Medical examination confirms it is genuine human tissue. No explanation has been offered for the selective preservation of the tongue while the rest of the body decomposed.

Spiritual Significance

The preservation of the tongue of one of the Church's greatest preachers is seen as profoundly symbolic — God preserved the instrument of his preaching.
